Manx Chasers - Course 42
Ballig Farm is the first and only cross-country course on the Isle of Man open to the public.
Professionally designed and built to British Eventing
standards, when it first opened two-years ago, it was
attracting only two or three people a week. Today, weekends
can see over 30 local riders tackling the course.
"We've virtually introduced cross-country riding
to the island," says Hilary Fletcher.
"Before all people could do was ride around the lanes
trying to avoid the traffic. At first, some of the horses
found it difficult to cope. It also took some riders
time to get used to it as well. A few weeks we had a
couple come here with their eight-year-old son. Up until
then he had only taken part in Pony Club events. Then
he went out on our course. They told me it was the first
time he had ever been out of their sight while riding
his pony."
